As Chairman of the Wickes Charity Committee for the past six and a half years I’ve been asked to write this blog to celebrate Wickes raising £3million - an achievement we never imagined when we set out to raise £200,000 in 12 months back in October 2006. This figure is the result of not a small group of people’s efforts but the support and dedication of all Wickes colleagues in stores up and down the country working hard to beat blood cancer, along with our Suppliers and customers. Our partnership has gone from strength to strength as each year stores continue to raise more money than ever before.
And this is because to Wickes, supporting Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is not just about raising money; the success of the partnership to date is a result of the charity and the cause now being embedded in the Wickes culture. Every store is active on some level with the majority increasingly seeing the great benefits which come with having such an important cause to unite colleagues. They are constantly working with each other to organise activities which will raise as much money as possible – from cake sales, fancy dress days, body waxes and baked bean baths, to climbing Snowdon, bungee jumping and cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End; Wickes colleagues have done it and had lots of fun together along the way! The partnership has helped us with our company value of making Wickes a great place to work and helped us enhance our relationships with our customers and suppliers, so I would like to thank the charity for what they have done for our business.
I am really proud to be a part of this partnership and don’t take my responsibilities as Chairman lightly. I have made sure I have been as much a part of all the crazy, fun and random fundraising activities that most Wickes colleagues are on a regular basis. I’ve trekked up Kilimanjaro, driven to Africa and back in a car that cost £300, run the London Marathon twice, and I even spent 35 hours last August Bank Holiday suspended 20 feet up in the air in a glass box, without any food or loo breaks to raise money and I’m not planning to stop anytime soon!
On behalf of everyone at Wickes, we are proud to be supporting Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research and will continue to work together to beat blood cancer.
