In summer 2014, Barry Ashdown is kayaking approximately 60 nautical miles across the English Channel to raise money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. The route takes him from Cherbourg to Swanage, across one of the busiest shipping routes in the world.

Barry is completing the challenge with his friend David, who is raising money for the Dorset Youth Association, and together they form the team 'Bowlers to You!'.

About their team name, Barry said, "David came up with the idea of the kaykaing the English Channel and we decided Cherbourg to Swanage would be a challenge. David called it ‘Back to Blighty’ and I can recall saying that we should wear a silly hat or something. I thought the traditional bowler hat would be good and so the name was born!"

Barry started kayaking at 14 years old and enjoys various kayaking disciplines such as white-water, surfing and sea kayaking. This challenge will be the longest distance he has ever paddled! The team are kayaking theThe Scilly Isles and circumnavigating the Isle of Wight as part of the training.

Barry said, "I will look forward to completing this challenge and keeping you up to speed with our whacky adventures. I would like to say and a huge thank you to all those that sponsor us."

The team are currently awaiting a date for the crossing, after having several dates postponed due to bad weather conditions.
