The beginning

So here we are, my very first blog......

Last August my Dad mentioned to me that he was going to ride from London to Paris. I thought he had lost the plot as I've never seen him on a bike before. To add insult to injury he suffered a major heart attack just over 5 years ago.

Anyway, his bike was delivered and he was off. To see him in lycra was funny to say the least.

I was concerned for his well-being however I could see that he was fully committed. I decided I would sign up and follow him on his journey as both of us know to many families who have been effected by this illness.

After buying my bike in September, I too, was now in lycra and a helmet.

Me and the bike seat did not get on to well for the first couple of rides. Now we understand each other and he knows I am the boss :)

My training got off to a very good start, averaging around 30 – 40 miles a session. I had planned on increasing this by buying a turbo for the house to help me train in the colder months.

Unfortunately I have come across a slight set back as I have broken not just one but both off my feet, that's a whole new story :(

This has not dented my enthusiasm in the slightest however it has made me more determined to get back out there especially with the evenings brightening.

If you are interested in my journey then please keep looking as updates will follow.

You can also follow me on Instagram as I will keep up to date with pictures too – DeclanWard8              http://instagram.com/declanward8/

Thanks.

Hi Declan,

I really enjoyed your blog although was gutted to hear about your feet - what happened?!! Wishing you a speedy recovery so that  you can get out on the bike again soon. How's your Dad getting on with his own training efforts?

Hi Andy,

Thank I'm glad you liked it, there will be many more to follow.

I'm hobbling around again with crutches so hopefully not to long out.

My dad is doing well thank you. He's been running the turbo into the ground when it's raining and he out trainig as much as possible.

Looking forward to the next few months of training.

Hi Andy,

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it, there will be many more to come.

Ironically I done it in the gym, 25 bent my feet back on the leg press machine. I am able to hobble around on crutches though so hopefully won't be out for to long.

My dad is doing well thank you. He's being running the turbo into the ground when it's been raining and out on the road when its not.

Looking forward to the next few months of training.

Ouch! That's why I tend to stay away from the weights in the gym (that and the fact that I'm no good at them!)

Sounds like your Dad is getting stuck in to the training which is great. As the weather (and your feet) improve it'll be great for you both to get out on the road. Will you be riding together?

It seems you have to treat them with respect or they'll fight back.

Yeah, he is doing well fair play to him. I'm hopping to be back on the bike in two weeks, fingers crossed.

We will be riding together to begin with, I might end up moving forward as the ride goes on but will be sure to finish together.
