The Bigger Picture in the North-East

This Thursday evening (26th September) I'm excited to be attending ‘The Bigger Picture’ event at Jury’s Inn in Gateshead. The event is a chance for anyone who supports Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research in the North East to come together and celebrate the progress we have made so far but also to plan for the future, where we can beat blood cancer entirely.

I’ll be talking during the evening about my own personal experience of childhood cancer and how I ended up being a leukaemia research scientist in Newcastle. As a researcher, it’s always a very humbling experience to meet supporters and fundraisers, as without their considerable efforts, we simply could not do the research we do.  Research science is a difficult and very time consuming career with many of us regularly working unpaid overtime, because we have genuine enthusiasm for what we do and what we are trying to achieve. Meeting people who are currently going through treatment for leukaemia, those who have lost family members or those have survived leukaemia is incredibly inspiring and makes the numerous late nights and weekends in the lab trying to get an experiment to work, worthwhile.

As a survivor of childhood leukaemia – it’s great to meet and chat to the children and their parents currently going through the same thing I did twenty years ago and hopefully give them a bit of reassurance that although it may not seem like it currently, their futures can be bright and unlimited by their early experience of cancer.

I’m really looking forward to meeting our supporters in the North-East, so if you are able to, please do come along and say hello and find out how we plan to carry on beating blood cancer in the North-East.

The event is at The Jury’s Inn, Gateshead from 6.30pm – 9.00pm and is free to attend. Please email Catriona at to RSVP.

What are you going to be talking about Vicky? Wish I could be there - will definitely be going to the one in London later next month.
