The work of the Calendar Girls is dedicated to the memory of John Baker, Assistant National Park Officer for the Yorkshire Dales, who died from non-Hodgkin lymphoma in July 1998, aged 54.

John’s wife, Angela (Miss February) and friends were members of the local WI. While John was still alive, Angela’s friend Tricia Stewart (Miss October) suggested that they do an alternative WI calendar - in the nude! The idea amused John. "But he said that we would never do it, that we were all talk," remembers Angela.

After his death, Angela and her friends decided to make the calendar to raise money to buy a new sofa for the hospital where John was being treated. They had no idea of the media sensation they would create.

To date, they have raised over £3million for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research and are the subject of Tim Firth’s Calendar Girls stage show which has now seen over one hundred sell out weeks across the country, and has become the most successful play to ever tour the UK.

The Girls’ fabulous fundraising work continues with personal appearances, endorsements, speaking engagements, photo shoots and much more.
