CLL? I thought my cholestrol was going to be high!

Shocked is an understatement..

I just happened to mention to my GP 6 weeks ago during  my last BP Check that during my last blood donation I almost failed the test for anaemia.

She arranged for a full blood count and called me back to the surgery about 10 days later to discuss the findings.

Expecting to be told I was either A:anaemic, B:diabetic or C:high cholestrol, the possible diagnosis of Leukaemia never crossed my mind.

Naturally I feared the worst and after seeing my Mum outside the Doctors, I broke down and gave her the news.

After that, I went home to do the hardest thing I've ever had to do. Tell my wife and two sons. My wife couldn't believe it and after a few tears she wiped her eyes took a deep breath and told me " it's going to be ok"

A second blood test and an appointment with the haematologist confirmed the diagnosis.

I've been diagnosed for a week now. It feels strange.

Hi Pauly,

Thank you so much for being brave enough to share your diagnosis with us. It brought back a lot of memories actually of when I was diagnosed and I remember being equally shocked when I was told the news - like you leukaemia wasn't something that had ever crossed my mind as a possibility.

I imagine you've been bombarded with information and this was without doubt the most difficult time for me on my blood cancer journey - there was so much to take in and get my head round both physically and emotionally and I found it very, very hard to know how to tell people beyond my closest family.

All I can say is that it does get easier as time goes by and you begin to come to terms with what it all means. The important thing to appreciate is that you're not alone and that there is a lots of support and advice out there to help you. You've already found our patient support which is fantastic and we also have lots of information on CLL that might be of use:

You may have found these already but we also have a number of blogs from others who are currenty undergoing treatment for CLL that might be of interest including a lady called Yvonne who has also only recently been diagnosed:

If there's anything else we can help you with, please don't hesitate to get in touch - it's what we're here for!

Hi Andy.
Many thanks for your reply and the links. It certainly helps to know I'm not alone and that help and advice is a mouse click or two away.
Kind regards
Paul (Pauly281)
