Cycling for Dad: The training so far

In August, Chris Ryland is cycling 1100 miles from Graz, Austria to Melbury Osmond in Dorset, England to mark the ten-year anniversary since his dad died from leukemia. Chris' cycling challenge will take him from his father's birth place to the place he was laid to rest. So far, he's raised over £1100.

Hi all.

Training for my 1100 mile ride is going well. In the 6 months since I started riding I've now completed over 1100 training miles with the distance, intensity and frequency of rides increasing every week. I've got a plan together to complete a minimum of 2500 more over the next 15 weeks, hopefully 3000 more before I leave for Austria. Hopefully that will get me ready for 1100 in 14 days!

Some fund raising events are being planned such as cake sales, bingo night, prize draw, car boot sales etc so that should raise some money! I have to get to that £5k target.

If anyone knows of a 5-berth motorhome that isn't being used in August please let me know, I need one for the trip and haven't got one yet! One way or another I'll sort it though.

Chris, I cannot tell you just how impressed I am by all of this. Fantastic challenge and an incredible tribute to your father. Good luck with all the training and thank you for everything you're doing to beat blood cancer. Inspirational stuff.

What an amazing tribute to your dad, hope you're going to blog so we can be with you all the way.

Thanks so much

What a fantastic achievement. Dad would be proud. As a survivor, I am very proud and inspired by what you are doing.

Well done you!

Hi Chris,
I just noticed your fundraising challenge on the news page of LLR. What an amazing idea! My husband and I are cycling to fundraise for LLR as well (my Dad suffers from an incurable form of blood cancer, hence we feature as Team Pop. Here is the link to our page:

As a matter of fact, we are currently based in the South of Germany very close to the Austrian border, near my family, and one of our challenges consist of a bike marathon in Austria in a month's time! We would like to help you in any way possible. Do get in touch with us if there is anything we can do for you - we are more than happy to assist you with the preparations here in Germany/ Austria, host you, and cycle part of the way with you. Here is our email address:

I look forward to hearing from you. In the meantime, all the very best for the training!

Thanks Andy. The support so far from the charity has been excellent. It's great to see so many people working together to beat blood cancer!

Thanks Cathy, I'll be blogging daily whilst on the ride, through Twitter, facebook, Just Giving and of course right here!

Hi Michaela, thanks for the kind words. I never though what I'm doing might inspire people, but it's comforting to think that maybe it does. We have to beat blood cancer, we have to.

Some inspirational words from a friend of mine, not directly linked to cycling, but I take inspiration from him.

Run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must......... just never give up.

Wow, fantastic, I've emailed you guys. I love your idea of 3 challenges for 3 stages of treatment. Awesome!

You're welcome Chris! If there's anything we can help with in any way do let us know - we're planning on featuring you're ride on our Facebook and twitter pages over the weekend so hopefully that should help raise some awareness and funds for you. Keep up the good work!

That would be fantastic Andy, thanks. Can I send you a photo of me in my LLR gear for you to use if you do feature me? That reminds me, I really should add it to my Facebook page!

Absolutely, Chris. Send us a photo. Seeing as you were doing it for your Dad and it's Father's Day we were thinking of tying it in to that on Sunday. Do you have a nice photo of you with your Dad that you'd be happy for us to use?
