Cycling star Alex Dowsett announced as Prudential RideLondon ambassador for Bloodwise
Team Movistar cyclist, Alex Dowsett was today (Monday 6 Feb) announced as Prudential RideLondon ambassador for blood cancer charity Bloodwise, the official charity partner of the event.
The former World Record holder will support fundraisers with training tips and advice, as well as helping to raise awareness of blood cancer and blood related disorders.
Commonwealth Games gold medallist Alex, who specialises in Time Trial and Road Racing, set a new hour world record in 2015 by covering nearly 53 kilometres at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester.
The 28-year-old, who has the blood disorder haemophilia, says:
“I am thrilled to become the official Prudential RideLondon ambassador for blood cancer charity Bloodwise. Blood cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the UK, claiming many lives each year, so I am delighted to use my professional position in the cycling world to help raise awareness of blood cancer. Due to my haemophilia, I am all too aware of how things can go wrong with your blood and have a significant effect on lives. I am looking forward to working with Bloodwise in support of such an important cause.”
Bloodwise has the largest charity team at this year’s Prudential RideLondon, taking place on Sunday 31 July, with 600 cyclists set to take part to raise money for research into blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
Matt Lawley, Head of Sports Events at Bloodwise, says: “We are delighted that Alex has agreed to become our ambassador for Prudential RideLondon. Having the support of someone with such expertise and success in the world of cycling, and to be able to share this knowledge with our fundraisers, is invaluable.
“It’s also a great opportunity to raise awareness of blood cancer and blood disorders, as many symptoms of the disease reflect those associated with haemophilia.”
