On 26 November our Winterton & District Branch member, Daniel (Danny) Redhead was being recognised by the Prime Minister’s Points of Light awards for his contribution and dedication to volunteering with Bloodwise.

Danny has also been involved with another campaign “Step Up To Serve” to encourage people to volunteer for good causes, which is how the Cabinet Office first heard about his work.

The daily Points of Light award recognises outstanding individual volunteers - people who are making a change in their community.  Each day since the campaign started last year, a volunteer is given this prize as recognition of the impact they’ve made – winners receive a signed letter and certificate from the Prime Minister, who will also tweet his congratulations about the winner.

Danny set up Winterton Branch with his school friends in 2011 when they sadly lost their best friend James to leukaemia.  They lobbied their head teacher to support their activities and have since gone on to involve their community.   Since they began fundraising they have raised £72,000 for our charity and set a youth volunteering scheme to keep the Branch motivated with new ideas.  Danny develops and delivers new and fresh fundraising ideas that inspire existing and new support. His fundraising ideas have included a bungee jump, skydive, The Big Copper Count Up, a new Bloodwise mascot and this Christmas their very own post box appeal.

Cathy Gilman, the Chief Executive of Bloodwise said ‘From the second I first met Danny, I knew he was a young man who would change the world. He is an inspiration to everyone; he won’t stop until we’ve beaten blood cancer and personifies all that it is to be Bloodwise. We are delighted that this has been recognised with this special award’.
