Day 3 – just over a month until ‘the big ride’… yay I actually got on the bike, but boy how tough did that seem today. Not sure if it is because I havn’t cycled for a couple of weeks or that it was still a tad windy. Anyway before I had even got off the estate.. my legs felt like led and I was having palpitations. Not sure if this was because I was dreading the cycle or the thought of having to at some point pass the geese.
Now we all have weird fears. Some of them are universal. Some of them are odd (mostly mine are odd). All of them are valid as emotions even if they are irrational. One of my fears…GEESE… I mean geese are the gangsters of nature aren’t they.. there is never one goose.. always a gang and I think they sense my fear… I’m sure I have a big flashy neon light on my helmet that is only visible to geese. 3 times on the way to work I had to stop…. I have tried everything.. bread bombs, talking nicely to them and then the full blown get outa my way… It always ends up the same.. me running backwards trying to protect myself with the bike and squealing (much to the delight of anyone that is around to witness this pathetic hysterical behavior)… anyway I would like to thank the nice young man this morning for walking me through the first ‘gang’. The second and third ‘gang’ well there were two and the start of one lock.. all was well I couldn’t see any babies with them so I slowly went past them. Now I was in between 2 locks and I spotted them… mom, dad and at least 7 babies. I stopped dead in my tracks… god how do I get past these now, they are too close to the canal side for me to get past without the chance of ending up swimming. So I stand there for 5 mins… and the babies spot me. Now I don’t know if they thought I had stopped to feed them or they were going to use me to practice attacking ready for next year when they have their own young… I mean lets face it… I’m an easy target. Well the babies start to run towards me.. Obviously so do mom and dad and again I am a flapping squealing mess, trying to run backwards dragging my bike, so im going back to the last lock… where the other two geese are still standing… at this point I just give up.. sit on the lock and don’t make eye contact with any of them. It worked… I sat patiently until I saw my chance to run past. It is no wonder I turn up at work a dribbling mess. I continue with my journey… still having at least a gazillion locks to go up before I arrive at work 30 mins late. God this is only a 7 mile journey… how the hell am I going to do 26 ???
