"I’m Dr Elaine Willmore and I'm a Senior Research Associate at the Northern Institute for Cancer Research in Newcastle.
Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research has consistently supported my work by investing in key research projects for my team.
I feel it is important to give something back to the charity that funds my research, so I make an effort to get involved in fundraising for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. I have taken part in the Great North Run and the Blaydon race in Newcastle to raise sponsorship monies. I also volunteer to help the charity, organising open days in our institute and giving talks to local groups about our research."
Many chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) patients become resistant to the standard chemotherapy drug, fludarabine. Dr Elaine Willmore’s research, which has already identified new drug compounds which are 10 times more effective against CLL cells, is continuing to develop this as a an alternative for CLL patients who need different treatments.
