A trio of Emmerdale stars are getting in gear for this year’s Mazda London Triathlon to swim, cycle and run for blood cancer charity, Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.
Tom Lister (aka Carl King), Matthew Wolfenden (aka David Metcalfe) and Lyndon Ogbourne (aka Nathan Wylde) are all venturing south of the Dales to London’s ExCel Centre on Saturday 7th August for the world’s largest triathlon.
Tom, Matthew and Lyndon will be taking on the ‘sprint distance’ at the London Triathlon, consisting of a 750m swim, 20k bike ride and 5k run, to help raise awareness in to research for treatments and cures for patients with blood cancers.
They will be joining Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research’s famous Banana Army, so called because of their distinctive bright yellow t-shirts.
All three Yorkshire favourites are Banana Army veterans. Lyndon, who plays scheming Nathan Wylde in the Yorkshire soap completed the London Marathon in 2009 while new dad and Emmerdale heartthrob Matthew completed it dressed as a chicken and Tom successfully took on the same challenge this year. None have taken on a triathlon before and all three are training hard for their upcoming challenge.
Tom, who plays local businessman Carl King in the much-loved soap, says: “This is my first ever triathlon and I’m really looking forward to the challenge. Swimming in open water in a wetsuit was a bit weird at first but I’m beginning to find a rhythm!
"All three of us are training hard between filming and we’re all looking forward to joining the Banana Army and raising awareness about Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research’s vital work.”
At the 2009 Mazda London Triathlon, the Banana Army raised over £30,000 for research into blood cancers including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research’s ‘Banana Army’ running team is sponsored by TVTimes and Adidas.
