A group of Scottish football fans are swapping the stands for the touchline this summer to take part in SPL Pound the Grounds, a unique half-marathon challenge to beat blood cancer.

The 50-strong team, led by Hearts supporter Campbell Blair, will run a mile at the homes of each of the 12 Scottish Premier League clubs over a single weekend to raise money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Campbell, from South Queensferry, Edinburgh, was inspired to organise the fundraising fixtures after his son Lewis was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in 2007: "It was a bolt from the blue," says Campbell, 35. "Apart from picking up more bruises he was like any other active four-year-old.

"The chemotherapy was very intensive and typically he was in hospital for 40 to 50 days per course, with little time in between courses, so at that point the hospital becomes your world.

"Thankfully Lewis responded well to treatment, both as a patient and a person, and to look at him now you’d never know they’d been anything wrong with him."

Setting out from South Queensferry Recreation Centre on 5 June the team will travel by coach to the stadiums on West coast.

They will visit the East coast clubs for the second-half of their half-marathon challenge on 6 June, with football-mad Lewis keen to join his dad for the run at Tynecastle before Campbell and the team complete their challenge at Aberdeen’s Pittodrie Stadium later that day.

Since his son’s diagnosis Campbell has committed himself to supporting Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. The team are well on the way to their goal of raising £10,000 to help the charity invest in further ground-breaking research into better treatments and cures for leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Campbell says: "Running in such iconic locations is really going to keep us going. People have been incredibly generous but we need to raise as much money as we can.

"Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is a fantastic charity. I know for a fact that their continuing research will help more kids like Lewis beat blood cancers."

Yvonne Dickson, Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Regional Manager in Scotland, says: “Campbell is as passionate about raising money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research as he is about football. By combining the two he and the team will make a massive difference to the lives of people with blood cancers.

"All the money raised will help Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research find better treatments and cures for leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma”.
