Great London Swim
Stephanie took part in the Great London Swim on 2nd July raising money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. She also took part in the Great East Swim in June.
Stephanie’s sister Andrea was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) in 2003, and her best friend Jack was diagnosed with the same type of leukaemia in 2007. Sadly Jack passed away later that same year, and Andrea passed away in 2010. Stephanie says ‘the only thing that I have found that helps me cope with this sad loss is fundraising. I have done quite a few events for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research - it’s very important to me to feel like I’m helping in some way and I find fundraising keeps me motivated and positive and pays back all the wonderful organisations, doctors and nurses who helped my loved ones through a terrible time’.
Stephanie took part in a sea swim last year and as soon as she had finished she was looking for more events to take part in. Open water swimming takes some preparation – Stephanie says ‘a mile in a comfy heated indoor pool is easy but out in the Devon seas it is proving a bit more testing, especially with the bad weather we’ve been having. But I can’t wait to get out into the water!’
Stephanie added to her fundraising by asking everyone to sponsor her. At the dance school that Stephanie runs they also held a sponsored pyjama wearing week where everyone donated £1 to come into classes wearing pyjamas or something yellow! Stephanie hopes that the money raised will help improve life expectancy, quality of life and eventually make all variants of the disease curable. She says it would also be wonderful to think that the work Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research does is saving other peoples sisters and friends.
