Fin’s Fighters are a team of 73 adults and children, who ran the Bananaman Chase 10km and 2km events on 2 October in Milton Keynes to show their support for Finlay Armstrong.
Finlay was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in October 2010, aged just three. ALL is the only blood cancer that is more common in children than adults and around 370 children are diagnosed with it in the UK each year. Finlay had been falling asleep at nursery on a few occasions and a blood test showed he had anaemia. After a few weeks, he was referred to Addenbrookes Hospital for a bone marrow biopsy, and was diagnosed with ALL. Finlay was immediately transferred to the children’s oncology unit where he began Regimen A induction treatment. Finlay was at high risk of relapse after treatment so his family made the tough decision to include him on a trial, through which he was randomly selected to move on to Regimen C treatment, which is more toxic. It was a massive decision but one which Finlay’s mum Tara and dad Tony believe gave him the best chance ever of beating his blood cancer.
Tara says ‘we are eternally grateful to Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research because Finlay would probably not be alive today if it wasn’t for the work they do. Finlay’s school asked me which charity they should support at an event they held to help Finlay. My reply was the one that is ultimately saving his life’.
Fin’s Fighters team have shown what can be achieved when friends and family come together, and have shown their strong support and love for Finlay. The team members are all of different levels of running ability but everyone was keen to come together for Finlay and his family.
Fin’s Fighters have put tremendous effort into fundraising, raising over £7,000 already for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research through sponsorship, and they also have other events planned including a quiz night, Zumbathon and disco. They are also planning a ball for summer 2014 to mark the end of Finlay’s treatment. Finlay’s sister Hannah and her two friends have been making friendship bracelets and badges to help with fundraising too. Fin’s Fighters have been followed by their local press who have made two videos of the team, before and during the Bananaman Chase run.
