My name is Caroline, I am 20 years old and I am a student in Paris suburb(France) – Studying for a technical degree specialising in management. In order to access to the second I needed to do one-month internship abroad (also to improve my English). Thanks to a friend, I was a member of the Digital team of Leukaemia Lymphoma Research (LLR), a charity in England that work against blood cancers, helping those living with it and also doing researchs to find cures.
During my time at LLR I met and interviewed various staffs members. It was a great pleasure to talk with Andy and Ellie members of the Engagement team. Andy is specialising on the blogs side, he writes articles on facebook or even chat on twitter with Internet users. Ellie is more focused on instagram, emails, podcast (even if she also does twitter and facebook).
Did you know that one of Andy's numerous challenges was to run from the North of Scotland to the south of England? For about two months, he did three days of racing and one day of rest. Using is time off to publish articles on his personal blog. I am truly amazed by his courage and strength.
When I asked Ellie what is her favorite time (at work), I saw her eyes, and realized how important for her was that question. She explained to me how people were so thanskful to her for what she does for them and did until then during a conference, about blood cancers. The moment when she realised her impact on those people: « At that time, I saw the importance of my work ».
Richard the Digital Director, who started the same day as me at LLR, told me that the charity is one of the few to have an internal digital team within the UK. An advantage that allows them to control their digital deliveries. His objective is clear: Successfully connect all projects accross the organisation by working together and wisely as a team: « LLR is a charity digitally driven by the progress ».
LLR is composed of several departments such as marketing, research, finance, fundraising, digital, sports events, human resources or social networks. The sport events are some of the most important activities as they generate a good income. The main events are Bikeathon, London to Paris, London Ride, Rugby Bikeathon or the Tour de France. The last London to Paris was on the 19 June 2014. I hope with all my heart that the success will be present as in previous years as wished by Daniel, part of the sports team.
Daniel explained me how do they organise an event from start to finish - it was really interesting. By the way for the first time of his life he will soon participate at a 10km race a marathon organised by LLR and is already thinking of the triathlon for next year.
I have done various activities, for example, organize and conduct interviews, translate my interviews from English to French (interviews being done in vocally), participate in the weekly teams meetings or create documents for the project management team.
I had the opportunity, thanks to Paul who is in the marketing team, to have a real impact to the business. I had to registered many articles on the website to inform users of upcoming events. At first it was not easy to communicate in English with him but he was patient and took the time to explain everything.
During my time in London, I discovered a different culture. A different way to work, more intense. I even lunched at 15h! (that certainly because I was with in the digital team).
I would like to thanks the whole team for their warm hospitality and happiness -
And especially Claude my internship mentor, for his advices, his patience, his availability but also good humor every day! I even played football with him within the LLR team. It was a very good game!
During my internship I met people who are passionate about their work and a very dynamic team. Working for LLR has been a real pleasure, a great experience I will never forget it.
