The Bloodwise Winterton and District Branch has been awarded £1,000 from the housebuilder’s Community Champions programme, which aims to support local communities by donating £24,000 to charities and good causes over 12 months.

A blood cancer charity in Winterton has received a fundraising boost after being nominated as ‘Community Champions’ by Persimmon Homes Yorkshire.

The Bloodwise Winterton and District Branch has been awarded £1,000 from the housebuilder’s Community Champions programme, which aims to support local communities by donating £24,000 to charities and good causes over 12 months.

Run entirely by volunteers, the charity’s Winterton team is working towards raising £100,000 by the end of 2017. The Persimmon Homes donation is a welcome boost to their fundraising efforts, which have already seen the branch raise more than £79,000 since it formed in 2011.

Daniel Redhead, Bloodwise Winterton and District Branch co-ordinator said: “We are incredibly grateful to Persimmon for choosing to support our cause.

“Following the loss of a friend to leukaemia we set up our branch in 2011 when we were just 14 and 15 years old. Over the years, the fundraising team has grown and we now have 30 members of all ages and expertise who are dedicated in helping to beat blood cancer.

“The team work tirelessly to help beat blood cancer in our community and we are constantly organising fundraisersand attend community events to raise funds and awareness.

“We are aiming to raise £100,000 by the end of 2017 so Persimmon’s donation is a huge boost to our goal.”

Simon Usher, deputy managing director at Persimmon Homes Yorkshire said: “We were very inspired by the dedication of the Winterton Bloodwise team who set-up their branch at such young ages; we felt this was very commendable and should be recognised.

“We have had a fantastic response to the Community Champions scheme and it is always difficult to choose which to support. If people were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champions.”
