In the South West, we’re delighted to announce that we have charity places for Exeter’s Great West Run for 2015. The run showcases an exciting 13.1 mile route through the city centre combining with pretty country lanes and stunning views across the heart of Exeter. There’s no entry fee for runners who obtain a charity place from us, meaning that they will save the standard £34.00 entry fee. We ask charity place runners to pledge to raise a minimum £200 in sponsorship. Click here to sign up.

As well as Exeter’s Great West Run, we also have charity places for the Bournemouth Marathon Festival for the second year running. The festival brings many distances together in one unique weekend of running. The course is fast and picturesque, making it a must-do for anyone looking to set a pb. There are 6 races to choose from, so there is something for all abilities.

For example, our local Bournemouth supporter, Sara Butler is donning her running trainers again to run the Bournemouth marathon in memory of her special brother-in-law, Dave Platt.

Dave was diagnosed with non-hodgkin lymphoma in 2003 aged 47. Sara says; “It was a total shock to his family as he was a very fit, non- smoking, health conscious man.” He was treated at Yeovil and Taunton Hospital and underwent a stem cell transplant in 2011 and was always so positive during his treatment. He remained the same, smiley person throughout even managing a joke with the nurses in the hospice. Sadly he passed away in 2012, aged 56. So Sara decided to run her first marathon in October 2013, after Dave’s sons ran the London Marathon in his memory to help beat blood cancers. Sara wanted to show that she could run a marathon too!

This year Sara wanted to run the marathon again to raise awareness for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research and raise whatever she can to help fund our life-saving research into blood cancers. Sara doesn’t want anyone to go through what they did. “The devastating loss we feel as a family has made us more proactive in raising awareness of this condition and will continue to do so to hopefully make a difference to all those, young and old who are fighting this disease. We have to make something positive come from our loss.” Sara can’t wait to run this amazing course in memory of Dave as she says “I run with him in my mind and I know he makes me finish!”

If you’ve been inspired by Sara’s story, why not run to help us beat blood cancers this year by taking part in Exeter’s Great West Run or the Bournemouth Marathon Festival. Help us raise vital funds to help blood cancer patients across the UK. Click on the links above to sign up.
