The Local Youth Development Program has been created to provide the youth of Winterton with a platform to develop their soft skills and become involved in our young, energetic and vibrant team of individuals dedicated to beat blood cancers. The branch is committed to mentoring these young people to help enhance their CV’s to make them more employable through providing opportunities to take an active role in our events, and manage their own projects. There will also be the opportunity for those that show commitment and dedication to the branch to receive awards in recognition of their work.
We are thrilled to have welcome fifteen young people onto the program that has been funded by the Winterton Lions and Winterton 2022 and on Saturday morning we held a workshop event with those that have signed up to join the program at Winterton Community Pavilion. The workshop was an opportunity to learn more about the branch and the work of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research nationally, the young people got to know each other and began work on exploring and planning projects that the members of the team will be working on.
It was fantastic to have a visit from Don Johnson from the Winterton Lions and Steve Dunkerley from Winterton 2022 who have funded the project. This gave them the chance to see how the program began and meet some of the young people involved. We also has Brian from North Lincs Tv who is currently working on putting together our promotional film for the Local Youth Development Program which will be extremely useful when we come to inviting our next cohort of young people onto the scheme.
Each young person received a log book, welcome pack, personal journey case studies, a pen and t-shirt. The log books will be an essential tool for them to record the hours they have volunteered which will ultimately lead to them being able to receive awards in recognition of their work. Already the fifteen young people are embarking on their first fundraising and awareness projects in their school, Winterton Community Academy, and will also be getting involved with our larger sale branch events.
This is a program that I am incredibly proud of. We have had mountains of support from Winterton Community Academy, and our funders the Winterton Lions and Winterton 2022, with other funding in the pipeline. This is going to enable us to provide the best opportunities for these young people to develop the soft skills that are essential to them in later life to make them more employable whilst they are helping to do a great thing in their community and enabling us as a branch to broaden our horizons in terms of what we can achieve as a group.
