Los Angeles & the mighty PCH

Intent on keeping the training up, I took my bike to work with me...

I am currently part way through the filming of a long project based LA. The second shoot however, fell just before the Fireflies Tour and I didn't want to lose what form I had scraped together while I was over there, so I packed up my bike, along with my camera, and took it with me! Luckily for me, after some initial prep, I had two days off over Memorial Weekend and so decided to fulfill an ambition of mine - to ride the Pacific Coast Highway! So 7am Sat morning, I set off from my hotel in West Hollywood and spent the next 150km ploughing into an hot, unyielding, unrelenting headwind. Yes, the scenery was stunning but with the Pacific North Westerly wind howling into my face I wasn't paying that much attention. Eventually, after 5.5 hours of pure grind, I arrived in Santa Barbara completely spent. Fortunately, before checking into my hotel, I paid a visit to ex- Tour de France soigner legend Shelley Verses, who I had filmed with last year shooting a documentary about Greg Lemond. Shelley was incredible: I showered, she made a tasty lunch, I got amazing nutritional & recovery advice then had an amazing massage, before dinner in town with her and surfer boyfriend Adam. The next day, despite searing heat, I flew back like I was bionic! (the tailwind may have helped I guess!). So that was a pretty epic ride and put a good 200 miles in the legs. Later, during the shoot, I also got to do some evening hill repeats up in the canyons and the Hollywood Hills. I actually loved cycling in LA. The roads are either smooth as glass or completely mashed-up & lethal. Either way was great fun and I was very glad I had taken my bike over.

Will, this sounds absolutely unbelievable! Very, very jealous. Well done, too, phenomenal effort! I hope you're not too sore and good luck with the Fireflies Tour - you should be fine after this adventure!
