Making a splash

Last night family, friends and colleagues gathered to recognise and celebrate the efforts of heroic swimmer, prolific fundraiser and dear friend of LLR, Mark Johansen.

Mark swam the English Channel solo back in September raising more than £20,680 to beat blood cancer. As if once wasn’t enough, a few weeks later he plunged back into the murky seas for another go, this time as a part of a relay team of young swimmers. He endured all of this—the early morning training, the jelly fish, the frigid temperatures, the exhaustion—for beloved friend and colleague Shelley and Ellie Merritt, the step daughter he never met, both of whom sadly passed away from blood cancer. Thank you Mark, you’re a legend.

Thank you to everyone who sponsored Mark, particularly north London estate agents, Prickett and Ellis. A special thank you also goes to Marks and Spencer for donating the delicious wine for last night’s festivities.

Privilege to be there, as Alastair Campbell said in his tweet "not a dry eye in the house" !

An absolutely wonderful achievement by Mark which fully deserved such recognition. His determination to succeed no matter what the cost is an inspiration to us all and I have nothing but respect for what he's done. Thank you Mark for pushing yourself to the limits to help us beat blood cancer.

What a magnificent achievement. I do a length of a pool, have to rest and then can attempt another. Shelley and Ellie would be so proud of you, and the amount you raised is fantastic. Thank you from a survivor who would not be here if not for people like you who have raised money towards the cost of research.
