The Mayor of Ribble Valley Borough Council, Councillor Richard Sherras aged 79, is doing a sponsored tandem parachute skydive in aid of the 2 charities nominated by him & the Mayoress – Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research and SSAFA (Soldiers Sailors & Airforce Families Assoc).

The jump is scheduled to take place, weather permitting, at Black Knight Parachute Centre in Cockeram, Lancs on 29th July.

The Mayor did his Army National Service from 1954 to 1956 in 23 Parachute Field Ambulance part of the 16 Independent Parachute Brigade, and his parachute jumps were from RAF Hastings & Valetta aircraft & from a USAF C119 ‘Flying Boxcar’.  His last jump was at RAF Manston in 1956, and he is a member of the Parachute Regimental Association.

The military jumps were at low level with a considerable amount of military operational equipment attached to the chest – he is looking forward to the extra thrill of high level (10,000 ft) freefall!

The Mayor has already received very generous support and hopes he will be sponsored by many others - all sponsorship money will go the charities, no expenses will be deducted. If you'd like to sponsor Councillor Sherras or if you'd like to discuss his fundraising, please don't hesitate to contact him at cllr.sherras@ribblevalley.gov.uk.
