My Story with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research

Hi there!

My name is James Davis and I'm proud to say that I've been a supporter of various different cancer charities for years. Having lost members of my family to cancer, I have always been a passionate supporter of people and organisations who go the extra mile to raise awareness, interest and money to win the fight against cancer.

Through my time working with Wickes, I have come into contact with Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and have been bowled over the by the dedication, enthusiasm and drive shown by this fantastic organisation to beat blood cancer.

So why set this page up?

Well, three reasons actually.

1. To help in my own small way to advertise the fantastic work that this charity does, knowing that they won't stop until blood cancer is beaten.

2. To share some of the weird and wonderful things that I've done or am going to do to raise money for charity, including tackling the three peaks in 2013, doing a tandem sky dive for the first time ever next month (8th June and did I mention I'm afraid of heights...) and sitting on the charity committee in work to help raise more money at a local and corporate level.

3. To tell you about the work I've done on CRM products this year as part of the partnership between Wickes and Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. We're selling a red bucket and red wheelbarrow and donating 50% of the profits to charity and I have the honour of being the Project Manager. In keeping with the nature of the wonderful relationship between our two organisations, this has been a real partnership, from product selection, through to delivery and marketing. I'm really proud that this project is going to deliver double the amount we raised through CRM last year, at over £100k for 2014. A really simple idea, it drives home the message for me that with a little effort, time and the help of the buying public, we can all help change the world.

So that's me...at which point I'll say thanks for viewing my profile and more importantly thanks for supporting Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research!

Welcome to the website James! Thanks for blogging, we're very much looking forward to reading your updates.

My dad has one of the Wickes red wheelbarrows, every time I go home he points it out to me and says 'see that, I'm helping your charity!'

When you blog, if you add the tags 'corporate fundraising' and 'Wickes', this will help us showcase your blog posts in relevant places on the site and link your blogs with other posts about Wickes. (I've added the tags to this post for you.)

If you have any comments or feedback about using the website just give us a shout, or let Rowan know and she can feed back to us.

Fantastic stuff James, good on you! As a leukaemia survivor myself I cannot stress enough how important the work of charities like Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research - they have funded the research that ultimately led to the developments in treatment that saved my life.

I'd love to read about the 3 Peaks Challenge as this is something that I've always wanted to do - did you have to train much for it?

Good luck with the skydive. I did it many years ago and it was one of the best things I've done in my life. Absolutely terrifying in the build up but the adrenalin rush and the sudden calm as you slowly float down once the parachute opens will live with me for the rest of my life.

What you guys are doing at Wickes is incredible - you've raised so much over the years and we're very lucky to have you on board. I look forward to meeting you guys next month up in Watford for Charity Champions Day.

Thanks for the tags, i'll get better at my technological skills over time!

Your dad sounds like a wise man, make sure he gets back into a store and buys himself a bucket too!!

Hi Andy,

'Praise from the praiseworthy is praise indeed' but when I've finished quoting Lord Of The Rings...its stories like yours that have inspired me in the first place so thank you for your comments, as a survivor it really does mean a lot.

Cant wait to do the skydive, wont pretend im not absolutely terrified at the thought but I'm sure your right, that feeling of adrenalin will make it worth it. Would love to build it up and do a solo jump one day but first things first!

As for the 3 peaks, we unfortunately had to abort it mid-way for safety reasons but I'm well up for doing it again and can re-assure you that the training was pretty intense but actually loads of fun (although that depends on your definition of fun being scrambling up the crag of Scafell Pike), would love to talk to you about it on the Charity Champion Day next month.

You're welcome James! Looking forward to meeting you to at the Charity Champion Day. I've got a few other challenges that I could do with a bit of help with to be honest and would love to pick the brains of another intrepid fundraiser for inspiration.

Good luck with the skydive - perfectly natural to feel nervous but if I can do it, anyone can!

Lets get our heads together on the day then Andy, look forward to it!

Thanks for the shout out James - much appreciated! Been looking into this desert challenge and not sure how I feel about it - will have to be a 2015 challenge at the earliest but not ruled it out entirely!
