Britain has decided on its favourite type of cake with chocolate cake being revealed as the 2017 runaway winner in a survey launched to celebrate National Tea Day on Friday 21 April.

Chocolate cake won by a considerable margin, with more than one in five (22%) people preferring it to second place lemon drizzle (13%) and third place carrot cake (12%). The quintessentially English Victoria Sponge fell flat in sixth place (9%), with banana loaf suffering a seriously soggy bottom as Britons’ least favourite type of teatime treat (2%).

Chocolate cake was equally popular among men and women, and within England (23%), Scotland (19%) and Wales (18%), but cake preference did vary according to age, working status, regional geography, and marital status.

People living with children were more likely to choose chocolate cake, with a whopping 44% of adults with three or more children in their household saying it was their preferred option. Full time students (31%) and the unemployed (33%) were also chocoholic fans, while over-55s said they actually preferred fruit cake (17% chose fruit cake compared to 15% who chose chocolate cake).

Over in Northern Ireland people voted coffee and walnut cake into the top slot (20%), while those in the South West of England chose carrot cake as their favourite (17%). People in Wales (18%) and Scotland (19%)

The survey was commissioned by blood cancer research charity Bloodwise to mark the launch of its new fundraising campaign ‘Tea with the Girls’. People across the country are encouraged to get together and host their own afternoon tea to raise funds for life-saving research into blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Diana Jupp, Acting CEO of Bloodwise, said: “With the money raised from Tea with the Girls we can fund more research that will save the lives of patients with blood cancer which kills more people each year than breast or prostate cancer.

“So pop the kettle on, get the cakes in, and know that you’re making a huge difference to the lives of patients. What better excuse to indulge in a slab of chocolate cake, lemon drizzle, or whatever takes your fancy?”

The fundraising campaign has been spearheaded by the original Calendar Girls, whose friendship and desire to make a difference saw them create the famous ‘alternative’ WI calendar which has, so far, raised £4million for Bloodwise and has recently inspired a West End musical written by Gary Barlow and Tim Firth.

Original Calendar Girl Angela Baker, whose husband John died from lymphoma and inspired the infamous calendar, said:

“My favourite type of cake is a Victoria sponge and I will be getting my recipe book out to bake for this fabulous cause.

“We never thought all those years ago that we would now be launching a national fundraising campaign to raise even more money for the charity. John would have been so proud.”
