NHS England confirms it will routinely commission second transplants

Today, NHS England has announced that it will make second allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplants routinely available to patients who have suffered a relapse.

This announcement is welcomed by Bloodwise - last year, NHS England had announced that they could not make this treatment available, so we are delighted that they have changed their mind.

In some cases, second or even third transplants have saved the lives of patients who simply would not be alive today if this treatment had not been available.  Having the knowledge that this treatment is available to patients should provide some reassurance to patients about the future of their care – previously, it would have been hugely disconcerting knowing that a second transplant would not be provided should they relapse.

This is fantastic news for patients, and safeguards a treatment that in some cases can be truly lifesaving.
