In a bright and sunny Greenwich park, 170 cyclists gathered to take part in the inaugural London | Paris: Be Unstoppable event. The Park was buzzing with a mixture of nerves, excitement and anticipation...and the Crew couldn’t help but think the riders had taken on an air of confidence from being in one of the key venues for the London 2012 Olympics only 12 months before.
Chief Executive Cathy Gilman, Chairman of Fundraising Alastair Campbell and our very own cycling hero Geoff Thomas, a leukaemia survivor and former footballer, delivered inspirational and emotive speeches before the start flag went down. The sight of a peloton of cyclists sprinting up towards the gates of Blackheath was awesome.
The riders met with gorgeous weather as they travelled the 80 miles down to Folkestone, some racing against the clock, some for the camaraderie and some were embarking on their first ride since recovering from a blood cancer.
Day one finished with a rest for the participants as they put their feet up for the journey under the English Channel to Calais where they were fed and watered before setting off for Abbeville tomorrow.
