Record breaking fundraising for Southend Bikeathon

On the 7th of September I had the pleasure of joining the Southend Branch for their 20th Bikeathon!

Having been involved with the regional bikeathons for the past few months, it was great to have the chance to see the Southend Bikeathon in action, especially this year as it was their 20th one!

On the 7th of September I joined the Southend Branch and nearly 700 riders bright and early at Shoebury East Beach for a 13 mile circuit, or 26 miles for those who were feeling brave! The riders were set off in stages throughout the morning so there was a great atmosphere of everyone coming and going throughout the day.

Terry Joyce and the Branch have the setting up of the Bikeathon running like a well oiled machine (no doubt due to their 20 years of experience!),  but I was able to make myself useful by helping Brenda, Lisa and Susan hand out T-Shirts, refreshments and well deserved medals. Some participants arrived in previous years T-Shirts, which was great because you could see just how many people have been coming back year after year to raise money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the day a success and a huge well done to everyone who took part this year, raising a record £33,000! It was a fantastic day and Terry has already let me know that he has started planning next year's ride so stay tuned for more information here as well as the Southend Bikeathon's website

Brilliant! Well done to Terry and everyone at the Southend Branch!

Wonderful news, congratulations to Terry and the Branch in this special anniversary year! Did you get some of the world famous Bikeathon afternoon tea? Worth entering for that alone!

Congratulations to Southend on their 20th Bikeathon. I helped with the first one so know first hand how much work goes into the organising. We've not been able to visit Southend for a few years now but will be taking part in the Birmingham Bikeathon this Sunday. Our thanks to all the many organisers around the country who put on these fantastic events. Good fun for the participants and lots of money raised in the process.

Well done to everyone involved with the Southend Bikeathon! Absolutely fantastic effort and I'm so glad for all the organisers that have put so much hard work over the years that this was a record breaking year. Keep up the good work!

First things first, thanks so much for helping get the Southend Bikeathon started all those years ago. How did you get on at the Birmingham Bikeathon?
