Oh la la! One of Birmingham's finest French restaurants is preparing to take to the roads in support of a city-based charity to mark the start of the Tour De France.

But head chef Didier Philipot and his staff at Edmunds French Fine Dining in Bridleyplace won't actually be taking to two wheels for the world's most prestigious cycle race! Instead they will lead diners on a gastronomic tour of the competition with a specially designed taster menu.

In addition £5 from every meal sold and every bottle of wine purchased during the competition will see the restaurant - owned by The Genesis Group - donate £5 to leading UK blood cancer charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

As an added ingredient England and Arsenal ace Jack Wilshere, who is one of the restaurant's best customers, has pledged to match pound for pound every penny raised for the charity during the cycling tournament's duration.

Jack - recently returned from England's World Cup exploits in Brazil - is good friends with restaurant manager Zack Michael and was only too happy to offer support to Edmunds' efforts in raising funds for the charity.

Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is a huge supporter of cycling, raising thousands of pounds over recent years through various rides to help beat blood cancer. Pedal for Petrov in September 2012 saw two colleagues, and friends of Aston Villa’s Stiliyan Petrov, cycle up to 80 miles a day over five days to raise nearly £100,000 for the charity.  Petrov, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2012, has since gone on to make a full recovery.

Edmunds will run its' special Tour de France menu to coincide with the race throughout July with diners treated to delicacies matched with wines from many of the regions the cyclists will pass through as they attempt to win the coveted yellow jersey.

Midfielder Jack, who is now preparing for the new Premier League season, said: "I am really pleased to support such a worthwhile charity and my friends at Edmunds too.

"Leukaemia affects so many lives and I am happy to do anything I can do to help raise funds and the profile of the charity."

Restaurant manager Zack Michael said: "It is great to see customers and staff behind this promotion and I cannot thank Jack enough too for his support.

"With £5 from every meal and bottle of wine sold from our Tour de France menu from July 5-26th going to the charity - we should raise some decent funds. Jack may have to dig deep but it's great to have his support!"

Emma Jane Jones - Midlands' regional manager for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research - said: "We are really excited that Edmunds French Restaurant is supporting us through their Tour De France Tasting menu.

"We are hoping this event will help to raise the profile of the important work we do to beat blood cancer.  We are also really pleased that the restaurant will continue its support through our inaugural Birmingham Bikeathon in September."

September sees up to 3,000 cyclists take to the saddle for the largest charity cycle ride ever to be hosted by the city. With the full support of Birmingham City Council, riders can choose to cycle one of the three routes on offer (26 miles, 52 miles or 100 miles).

Edmunds has already pledged to offer discounts on food to the riders taking part while the restaurant's sister venues Cielo Italian and boutique bar Nuvo will also offer discounts and a celebratory after party for all those involved."

This is brilliant news! As an Arsenal fan it's great to hear that Jack Wilshere is involved too - I might have to pop up to the restaurant and give it a try if it's one of his favourites!
