In partnership with our celebrity supporter, Scottish actor Sam Heughan, and Amazon Prime Video, we’ve launched #TartanTuesday – a fun (and colourful) initiative to help improve the lives of blood cancer patients.
Quite simply, every Tuesday through to 10 May, we’re asking you to gather and wear any items of tartan you have and tweet your photos using the hashtag #TartanTuesday and Twitter handles @Bloodwise_UK and @AmazonVideoUK. This is the moment your tartan socks (and my tartan shoes) have been waiting for!
You can also make a donation of £3 via JustGiving, or by texting TTBW54 £3 to 70070. Funds raised from #TartanTuesday will be invested in clinical trials and research into new treatments for blood cancers, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma – as well as enabling us to provide vital patient support and information to all those affected by the disease.
Since the campaign kicked off on 12 April , the response has been nothing short of brilliant. We've been sent hundreds of photos from all over the world – from dogs in scarves to kids in kilts – and received £554 in donations so far. THANK YOU for your incredible support Tartan warriors!
Here's a selection of some of the delightful images that made their debut this week – head to our Facebook gallery to view the full range. We're certain they'll give you some inspiration for next week's #TartanTuesday!
Sam Heughan has supported us for a number of years through marathons, triathlons and, most recently, with his fundraising campaign "My Peak Challenge". Since it began in 2015, the initiative has raised nearly £200,000 to help beat blood cancer – an extraordinary amount.
Sam says, “It’s really important to raise awareness as blood cancer is the fifth most common cancer and affects people of all ages. I hope people enjoy #TartanTuesday, have fun with it, and that we raise as much money and awareness as possible. I look forward to seeing everyone’s pictures on Twitter!”
#TartanTuesday draws inspiration from Sam’s Scottish nationality and the highlander themes of hit TV series Outlander, the second season of which launched on Amazon Prime Video on Sunday 10 April.
Bloodwise has a strong presence in Scotland, with over £6million currently invested in blood cancer research projects at Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities.
Cathy Gilman, Chief Executive of Bloodwise, says, “Sam’s dedication to Bloodwise over the years has been absolutely fantastic and we are proud that he has once again chosen to support our charity by fronting #TartanTuesday.
“We are looking forward to working with Amazon UK on this great initiative which we hope will raise vital funds and awareness, and enable us to improve the lives of even more blood cancer patients.”
