On Tuesday 6 May our charity partners, The Restaurant Group hosted a fun packed evening of fundraising and entertainment in their Tex-Mex restaurant, Chiquito’s in London’s Leicester Square. A number of our Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research team were on hand, which doubled as a fundraiser and a celebration of a very successful partnership.
We were greeted with prosecco on entrance as two TRG staff, Phil Gilbert and Michael Taylor went head-to-head in our exercise bike challenge (kindly provided by Wattbike) just inside the double doors that opened to Leicester Square, much to the bemusement of passing tourists! The two red faced heroes did an absolutely fantastic job in both fundraising and raising awareness of this fantastic partnership.
Our Chief Executive, Cathy Gilman then took the floor to recognise the tremendous success of our last five months working together. Placing on record Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research’s enormous gratitude to The Restaurant Group and all of their colleagues, suppliers and customers and taking the opportunity to explain the importance of our work to beat blood cancers.
Our charity ambassador, former England footballer and top cyclist, Geoff Thomas, spoke proudly of his involvement in beating blood cancers and how Danny Breithaupt, Managing Director of The Restaurant Group, will be joining him and a number of others taking on our epic London | Paris: Be Unstoppable cycling challenge in June. Good luck to you both and everyone who is taking part!
Danny then went on to tell us how enthusiastic TRG were about beating blood cancer, thanking his staff for their dedication to the cause and urging everyone to give generously before ushering us to our seats for a three course meal. Hot and tasty Tex-Mex food was served by friendly staff and while we all merrily stuffed our faces Danny and Geoff held a raffle. Prizes included a pair of trainers, an iPod Shuffle, a bottle of champagne and a cycling shirt signed by Great Britain cyclist Luke Rowe. As we ate, a local artist sketched some hilarious caricatures of the night’s attendees. Our Digital Engagement Manager, Ellie Dawes was chuffed to come off looking like a cross between Hilary Clinton and Meg Ryan! Next up was the charity auction, where prizes such as a meal for two in a five star restaurant and a weekend for two in any European city courtesy of Small Luxury Hotels went under the hammer and were scooped up by The Restaurant Group’s very generous suppliers.
A fantastic night was had by all and we’re delighted to announce that the event raised over £6,000! A hefty sum to add to an already huge total. The Restaurant Group are set to sail past their £250,000 six month fundraising target. It was great to put faces to the names of The Restaurant Group staff who we’ve worked alongside over the last four months. They’ve overwhelmed us with their enthusiasm and dedication: hosting a range of great events in restaurants around the country to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds and boost awareness of our mission to beat blood cancer.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to The Restaurant Group, their staff and their suppliers. It’s been a pleasure working with them and their contribution has exceeded all our expectations. Special thanks go to Becky Airey, Laura Wilkes and Tara Cunningham who have been such a driving force throughout the partnership. They did a fantastic job in organising the night and making sure everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
You can help The Restaurant Group smash their £250,000 target by making a donation on their fundraising page. All donations of £1 or more will receive a £10 voucher to eat at a Frankie & Benny's store.
