Tom Jones, Regional Chair for the North, shares his answers to my questions with us

Hi Tom, can you give us a bit of background about your involvement with us?

I joined the Cardiff Branch in the autumn of 1970. I served as treasurer for about 7 years and now as chair for the past 20 years. I was also deputy chair for the region for 6 years.

What drives you to keep fundraising?

We lost our son from ALL in 1976 after nearly six and a half years of treatment. We have always felt that fundraising to defeat blood cancers is our best way of doing something for him, and in his memory.

What do you do to recruit more people to the Cardiff Branch?

Whenever we come into contact with individuals who shows an interest in fundraising for the charity we invite them to attend our branch meeting. They are then encouraged to take part in our events and to become a regular branch member.

What do you get from volunteering with us?

In the first place, some satisfaction that we are striking back at the disease which so cruelly took our son from us. The support we receive from the public makes us aware that we are doing something worthwhile. We also meet patients who may not want to join our fundraising but are interested in, encouraged by and grateful for, the work of LLR.

If someone were to ask you how your activities have helped you personally, what would you say?

There is a saying "if it is to be, it is up to me". Well I cannot defeat blood cancers on my own but being part of a large team, with the same aim, with individuals with different parts to play, gives me the encouragement to continue fundraising for a very worthwhile cause, which is now producing major benefits for patients.

My thanks to Tom for sharing his story with us, If you would like more information on the Cardiff Branch, or any of our other Branches then please do contact me on 0131 524 1321 or email me on dkennedy@beatingbloodcancers.org.uk.
