Our Unstoppable Fundraiser for August is 10 year old leukaemia sufferer Max Hill. He’s plucked up some serious motivation and courage and decided to take on the Robin Hood Mini Marathon in Nottingham on September 30th.
2.5km isn’t a distance to be taken lightly and given Max’s current condition, it’s a truly amazing feat. He’s chosen to raise money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research and When You Wish Upon A Star, two very worthy causes. His mother Louise talks about his incredible story...
“In October 2010 we were given the devastating news that Max had Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and Central nervous system disease. Our hearts were completely broken.
The next 4 months were spent on the Oncology, Intensive Care and High Dependency wards as Max had suffered severe side effects to the intense chemotherapy. He had lost over a stone in weight from sickness and was refusing to eat food. Max endured daily physiotherapy to rebuild lost muscle, even standing up for 5 seconds became a chore.
In early March 2011 Max came home. By his 9th birthday in April he was starting to eat food and was gaining weight. With the excellent support from hospital staff, family and friends Max continued to gain strength, determination and confidence.
Now in 2012 Max is on his maintenance phase of treatment which we hope to finish in February 2014. He attends school, rides his bike and tries to do what most 10 year old do. We have good days and bad days. The daily chemo can often make his bones weak and walking becomes an issue but with Max’s enthusiasm he tries to not let it get him down for long. We are extremely proud of what Max has achieved in his battle against leukaemia and support him in his journey and future quests.
When he heard about the Robin Hood Mini Marathon he literally jumped at the chance to take part!"
Max says of his challenge -
“I want to raise lots of money for charity to help prevent the pain and suffering that Leukaemia and Lymphoma causes and to help other people like me to get better quicker!”
