Our Unstoppable Fundraiser of the month for July is Lesley Flounders. She’s taking part in the Robin Hood Half Marathon on 30th September 2012.
Over the last few years the Robin Hood Half Marathon has made its name as one of the fastest, flattest and most scenic half marathons in the country. Lesley will be taking part in this marathon for the first time ever. 21km or 13.25 Miles is certainly not a distance to be taken lightly.
In May 2010 Lesley's mother was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. After several months of gruelling radio and chemotherapy, she was given the all clear. Tragically, only days after her mother were given the all clear, Lesley lost her father to a stroke. Her dad had heroically nursed her mum through treatment and to her first clear scan, so this challenge is as much for her father as it is for her mother.
Lesley says of her challenge and Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research’s work – “I am really looking forward to it and trying my best to train hard so I am fully prepared. I enjoy running, but have never tackled anywhere near this distance before. I chose Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research as my sponsorship charity because of my personal connection: my mother's battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. My mother is not sure whether she would have been so lucky had it not been for the research funded by Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. In learning more about other blood cancers over the last few years I have realised just how many lives this type of illness touches, and as a parent, I am particularly keen to raise money for a charity that funds research to prevent illnesses that effect so many children and young people. The research funded and undertaken is immense, but we need to work together and donate generously in order to increase survival rates even more.”
Lesley is currently a third of her way to reaching her total for her challenge. To sponsor Lesley please visit her fundraising page. Further information on the Robin Hood Half Marathon can be found on our event page.
