Our fundraisers of the month for May are Phil King and Norma-Jean Smithson, who some of you may well have heard about through our website, facebook and twitter pages.
Phil called us back in October to say that he wanted to make a difference and in a big way. He wanted to raise thousands of pounds to help beat blood cancers and therefore he had thought up a plan to raise as much money and awareness as he could. His challenge was to run from Manchester to London via several other towns in just seven days. This was equal to over 300 miles or 11.5 marathons in just one week. Some called him mad, others crazy, but now we know that the words to describe him are dedicated, passionate and unstoppable.
This challenge would not have been possible without the unfaltering and committed support of Phil’s girlfriend, Norma-Jean. Between them they planned the route, organised hotels, resting places and drivers for each day, contacted the press, companies and organisations, wrote a blog and uploaded photos, persuaded friends, family, colleagues and even strangers to donate, and of course completed the challenge to help beat blood cancer. Phil informed us on several occasions that the running was actually the easy part!
Norma-Jean sent us an email after day four of the challenge to update us on the challenge and how Phil was doing. She said, “His feet are literally black and blue from the pounding on dry mud divets for miles on end - the feet are not a pretty site, if you saw them you would wonder how they would even manage 50 yards, let alone an astonishing 56 miles today.” This highlights what we mean when we say our fundraisers are unstoppable. Phil and Norma-Jean got through the pain, tiredness and setbacks and together achieved so much; not only completing this incredible challenge but also raising an amazing £6,000 for our life-saving research.
