The weekend of 5th and 6th October saw yet another of our sports fundraisers taking the definition of ‘unstoppable’ to new heights. Nick Hitchings, from Worcestershire, travelled to the inaugural Bournemouth Marathon Festival to run all FOUR races at the event – the 5km, 10km, half marathon and full marathon, clocking up a total distance of 48 miles over two days, and raising funds to help beat blood cancers in the process.

Nick, 44, was inspired to fundraise for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research after his mother Joan was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 2011.  Thankfully, Joan is now in remission. Nick says: “Seeing those who go through such a tough treatment, I wanted to give something back to those dedicated people who are working hard to find a cure for such a terrible illness.”

The weekend’s endeavours got off to a relatively gentle start with a 10k and 5k run on the Saturday, but Sunday was always going to be the real test with a total of seven hours’ near enough non-stop running. Having completed 13 miles in the morning and watched his fellow half marathon runners cross the finish line safe in the knowledge that their work was done for the day, Nick must have wondered what he’d let himself in for when he had to jump in a taxi, get back to the start line and pound the pavements and promenades for a further 26 gruelling miles.

Spurred on by the experiences of his mother though, Nick knuckled down and completed his epic running quest. “It was a pretty big challenge but nothing compared to what my mum has been through. The worst bit was 12 miles into the full marathon, when I really started to struggle. Having already run 25 miles that day, I knew I had a long way to go”. Nick’s incredible achievement has earned him semi-legendary status within the Bournemouth Marathon Festival community, and we’d like to extend our congratulations and a huge thanks to Nick from the entire LLR sports team as well!

Nick’s fundraising currently stands at more than £500 – a fantastic total which you can add to should you wish, either via Just Giving at http://www.justgiving.com/Nick-Hitchings-Challenge40 or via text donation by sending the code NICH48 to 70070.
