Viv and Graham Middleton and their four children are delighted to be hosting ‘Walking to Beat Blood Cancer (Take 2!)’, the second 53 mile, 24 hour relay walk in support of Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. The walk which was held for the first time in 2014, will see 100 walkers trekking through the Derbyshire landscape on 11 & 12 July starting and finishing at 10am. Last year’s event raised over £4,000 and the Middleton family hope to raise an equally brilliant sum of money this year.
On September 8th 2010, Graham was diagnosed with Follicular Non Hodgkins Lymphoma and was initially placed on Watch and Wait. By June 2013, however, Graham was told he would need further treatment to control the disease and began six rounds of chemotherapy. At the start of the treatment, Graham was doing well and even managed to complete the Three Peaks Challenge. After the third round, however, the treatment began to hit Graham hard and he became quite sick. With four young children, it was difficult for Graham’s family to see him so ill and lose all his hair.
Although Graham unfortunately did not quite make a full year in remission and has gone through a further course of radiotherapy this year, he remains in good health and is ready to take on his next walking challenge!
Last year, the family decided they wanted to do something to help others going through a similar experience and the idea of the relay walk was developed. After initially hoping for just 20 friends and family to join them, word quickly spread and over 100 joined the family in the 2014! In the family’s own words, their motto is ‘We have cancer in our lives….but we’re not letting it define our lives’.
