DIY retailer Wickes has announced a two-year extension to its successful charity partnership with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. Wickes colleagues voted overwhelmingly to continue with the partnership, which has seen the chain raise £1.4 million to date.

Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research were the first ever national charity partner for Wickes and in August this year colleagues were given the option to continue fundraising for the blood cancer charity or to choose a new partner. Of the votes cast, 84% were for a cancer charity and, of those, four out of five colleagues wanted to stay with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Jeremy Bird, Managing Director of Wickes, said: “The positive vote, along with the £362,000 already raised in 2010 alone, confirms our view that to continue with this incredibly successful partnership is the right decision. The team at Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research has given us a fantastic network of support, which has been invaluable to the partnership’s success.

"The commitment of Wickes colleagues in 196 stores up and down the country has been quite humbling and each year we’ve taken our fundraising to another level. The Wickes Board is incredibly thankful to every one of them and we’re looking forward to raising even more money for this brilliant charity over the next two years.”

Wickes named Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research as its national charity partner in October 2006, aiming to raise £200,000 during a year-long partnership. The company’s fundraising success led to its extension and by the end of 2009, the total raised had reached £1 million.

Fundraising led by Wickes colleagues has included organised walks between stores, music festivals, sports tournaments and canoe challenges.  There have also been nationwide collections at stores, a range of fundraising merchandise produced for the partnership and annual charity dinners for the DIY chain’s suppliers who have been generous too.

Kate White, Director of Fundraising at Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research said: “Wickes has shown incredible dedication to fundraising for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research since the partnership began and we’re so grateful that colleagues have voted to extend it. It is not just the colleagues’ enthusiasm and generosity that has led to its success, but also that of the Wickes management, customers and suppliers who have truly gone ‘above and beyond’ to make it work. Without a doubt, the money Wickes has raised is saving the lives of patients with leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. As a charity we’re committed to spending every penny wisely on quality research that is making a real difference.”
