"Will it grow back Mummy?" A novella by Joy Tugwell

Many years ago as a young woman and mum I was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. At the time I could find no published story I could relate to. Me, an ordinary woman who seem to lurch from one odd, awkward and comedic situation to another. I so wanted to read something that made me laugh and would help me to understand that I could and would get through it. I recently read a quote that said "If you can't find the book you want to read on the shelf, write it." And so I really hope I have...

Having been encouraged by family and friends for so many years to share my stories I have finally taken their advice and written a novella. The novella is written with an absolute purpose to encourage and help those who follow a similar path, most of all to make you smile. Laughter really is the best medicine and as I began my treatment it's what I craved the most, normality and laughter.

Although my journey was mixed with a little sadness the people and situations I encountered along the way were quite extraordinary! Unable to publish my book traditionally, the general concenus being I am not a celebrity and so not viable (ironically one of the reasons for my writing) despite the lovely and wonderful comments I received from said publishers.

I have now recently self-published on Amazon and the response has been a little overwhelming. A donation from each book is divided equally between Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research and Sarcoma UK. I would like to raise as much as possible for these deserving charities and hopefully help those following a similar path along the way. I am posting this blog with kind permission from the LLR as I need your help to promote its publication.

It has taken such a long time for me to do this, perhaps because I knew I would have to re-visit places I didn't particularly want to go back to. However in so doing it enabled me to give thanks and acknowledge the love and kindness I received in absolute abundance from family, friends, strangers and humanity. It is said anyone can write a book, as everyone has a story to tell, and so this is mine...

If you've recently been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and have yet to receive treatment you could be eligible to take part in a new clincial trial. Read more here.

Joy thank you so much for sharing this!

I completely agree that keeping a sense of humour is so important and I would love to have read a book by someone who had been through similar experiences to me whilst I was undergoing treatment. I read Lance Armstrong's book in the end and was devastated when the truth was outed as I had previously had so much respect for him.

I will definitely download your novella and hope others do the same. Together we will beat blood cancer!
