Lizzie Armitstead’s dominance of the Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research Best of British jersey continued at the penultimate stage of the Friends Life Women’s Tour.

The crowd in Welwyn Garden City didn’t let a heavy downpour at the race climax dampen their spirits, and were described as “the noisiest so far” by the announcer.

Lizzie, who suffered a puncture for the second day in succession, held on to the jersey and looks likely to be named the Best British rider when the Women's Tour finishes tomorrow.

The Best of British jersey was presented by Leukaeima & Lymphoma Research supporter Casey Bex, age six, and her mum Nikki. Casey and her family became supporters of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research following her diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in January 2010.

Casey’s mum Nikki described the experience as fantastic. “It was absolutely amazing being on the podium to present the jersey on behalf of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. I was honoured to get up there with Casey and it was a fantastic day all round for our whole family.”

Her dad Bradley added: “It’s unbelievable to look at her now, compared with a couple of years ago when she was diagnosed. We soon learnt that because of the fantastic research into blood cancers, led by charities such as Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, many people like Casey are beating the disease and going on to live their lives to the full.”

The final stage of the Women’s Tour takes place tomorrow and will bring an end to what has been a great few days.

Fantastic blog Adam! Great to see little Casey up on stage with her a smile on her face - she looks so well!
