Over the past 6 months we ran a new fundraising challenge called the Young Lawyers Enterprise Award (YLEA), which aimed to have teams of trainee lawyers from around the UK take a small seed fund of £100 and work together planning and hosting fundraising events to raise as much money as possible. For the young lawyers this allowed them to network with different firms, develop core skills whilst raising money to help beat blood cancer.
For our first year, we had fantastic teams from:
• Weightmans LLP
• Browne Jacobson
• Hodge Jones & Allen
• CMS Cameron Mckenna
• Middlesex University
• Dexter Montague LLP
• Blandy & Blandy.
For more information about each team, click on their links to go to their pages.
Each team had to present their plans and ideas to a panel of high profile judges from the charity and legal sector, which consisted of:
• Cathy Gilman: Chief Executive of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research
• Rebecca Priestly: Head of HR Legal at Lloyd’s Banking Group
• Andrew Ewbank: Marketing Manager at Blandy & Blandy LLP
• Mark Lacey: Head of Marketing and Communications at Northern Trust,
• Jessica Collis: HR Manager at Hogan Lovells
• Michelle Gray: Recruitment Marketing Manager at Hogan Lovells.
Our thanks goes to all the judges who were a huge help as they gave feedback, suggestions and encouragement to our teams, and helped teams shape their ideas into achievable and manageable fundraising projects. Teams also had to film themselves participating in a mooting challenge, which was kindly marked by Stuart Stephens and colleagues from Holborn Chambers.
There was a huge selection of different events being held throughout the 6 months, from cake sales to fitness classes, walks, jail and bails, and finale balls. The teams were judged not only on the amount of money they raised, but they were judged on their planning, leadership, knowledge, communication, negotiation, problem solving and mooting skills.
All teams did extremely well this year, not only raising a brilliant amount but also creating a new level of awareness of the charity amongst the legal sector and their networks. Our ultimate winners topped the fundraising leadership board by a hairs breadth and also demonstrated excellent attention to detail, great passion and enthusiasm but most importantly top quality team work.
Team Hodge Jones & Allen are our 2013 Young Lawyers Enterprise Award Winners!
The team raised a whooping £11,747.41 and scored 91/100. Their most successful activities were HJA-il & Bail events, which involved locking up senior partners in with nothing but their phones and told they can’t come out until they’ve reached their bail amount! They even locked up Founding Partner Patrick Allen, who showed great support for the team and for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.
The team won the title of the YLEA 2013 winners, and trophy, as well as a surprize prize donated by Dale Carnage Training. This £18,000 worth of training is a fantastic opportunity for the team to have world renowned training in Effective Communication Skills and Human Relations to develop new skills and get ahead in a hugely competitive sector. A huge thank you goes to Dale Carnage Training for their involvement in the 2013 challenge.
This year the challenge overall raised a fantastic £43,500, and we are looking forward to building on a great first year and raising even more.
