Join the Lord Mayor of Birmingham this spring & summer and grow one of Nancy’s giant sunflowers to help beat blood cancer!
Enter our competition and grow the tallest sunflower you can. We ask that each person entering raises a minimum of £10 in sponsorship or makes an equivalent donation.
Nancy’s sunflowers is a new fundraising activity designed specifically for children, the idea of which came about from a little girl called Nancy who was diagnosed with leukaemia aged four. To help raise money to beat her disease, she gave sunflower seeds and a sponsor form to all her classmates and asked them to grow them, gaining sponsorship from friends and family for doing so.
Here at Bloodwise, we thought this was a wonderful idea and a great way to get children interested - not only in raising money to help others - but also in enjoying the outdoors and learning about growing and caring for nature. We’ve developed Nancy's idea into an activity pack that includes an instruction worksheet, a sunflower to colour in, sunflower seeds to plant, growing instructions and a sponsor form.
It's a really simple idea and can include your friends, family, school and community groups. April/May to June/July is the best time for planting and sunflowers should grow within 12 weeks - a great summer holiday project!
How to enter our competition:
To take part, we simply ask that each child raises a minimum of £10, or donates £10 to Bloodwise via the Nancy's Sunflower's Just Giving page.
- Register here to take part in Nancy's Sunflower's. We just need a few details from you and then we will send you your sunflower pack.
- Once your sunflower is fully grown, measure the height of your sunflower in centimetres, from the base of the stem (not including your pot) to the tip of the tallest petal. The tallest sunflower will be the winner!
- Email your photo and the height of your sunflower to firstname.lastname@example.org, or post it to Bloodwise, Medical School, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, B15 2TT, by Saturday 9 September 2017.
- Completed worksheets should be returned to Bloodwise, along with sponsor forms and donations by the end of September 2017
You will receive regular emails asking how your growing is going and inviting you to share pictures of you with your flowers to share on our website and social media.
We hope that you, your friends and family will participate in this fantastic challenge and we are really excited to see all the amazing sunflowers that everyone will be growing around the country!
