My routine surgery was suddenly very un-routine for everyone involved. I awoke from the anesthetic in the intensive care unit on a ventilator with a breathing tube in my throat. I’d taken care of hundreds of people in this exact situation, but I’d never experienced it from this side. Once I was fully awake, I was quickly weaned off the ventilator and was given the news. I had lymphoma.
