Great South Run rounds off an unstoppable year of fundraising

So the ever-popular Great Run series finished their 2014 events in style last weekend with the Great South Run in Portsmouth. Throughout the year we have had around 1,800 adults and over 1,000 kids take part in the events, raising an incredible £275,000!

As the sponsorship continues to come in from the recent events we went to in Portsmouth and Birmingham, I would like to thank all of our fantastic runners and the friends and family that support them in their heroic efforts. Without their hard work we would not be able to continue our vital mission to beat blood cancers.

The first event I went to since I started in July was the Great North Run weekend in Newcastle/Gateshead this September, where I not only got to support our Junior & Mini runners but got to take part in my third Great North Run in, for once, glorious sunshine. It’s been rain and thunderstorms for the last two years so putting on the factor 30 suncream was a nice change!

But my running exploits are nothing in comparison to those inspiring, dedicated and indeed, unstoppable, Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research runners I’ve met over the last few months. Some have lost parents, siblings, friends and spouses to blood cancers whilst others have someone they love going through treatment at the moment.

At the Great South Run I had the pleasure of meeting lots of our fundraisers including Lyzanne, Nadia & Theresa, who had come all the way from Gibraltar to take part, and Jack Marshall (& family), who was recently given the BBC Radio 1 Stephen Sutton Teen Hero Award in recognition of his amazing fundraising efforts whilst living with Moebius Syndrome.

This year’s Great Run events may have come to a close but I’m already looking forward to making next year’s events even better and I’d love you get involved and sign up to run an event for us in 2015. Whether it’s a Mini or Junior race, a 5k, 10 miler or half marathon – the Great Runs are held throughout the year and across the UK so you really have no excuse!

We’re currently planning for our events in 2015 so please check out the running events pages on our website for more information.

Fantastic effort by all concerned. Thank you so much to everyone that's taken part and all the friends and family that have made donations, come out to cheer on runners and encouraged others to do the same. I'd love to do a Great Run event next year and if my lungs ever allow me would love to do all the events in one year!

My 8 year old niece Honey-Mae Stephenson, did the Mini GSR raising over £400. Everyone wearing that bright yellow tee were very supportive and she was so happy to raise money for such a good charity. Running past the leukaemia research guys and them cheering her name really helped her. See you all next year. xxx

You've every right to be proud, Hayley - that's a terrific effort by Honey-Mae and we're so thankful to have her as one of our fundraisers. Really glad that she got the lift she needed running past our cheer point and wish her all the best in the future.
