A running battle will take place on the streets of Sheffield on September 5 when supporters of Yorkshire and Lancashire take each other on at the Bupa Great Yorkshire Run.

With up to 10,000 runners expected to invade the city for the10k event, every entrant will be asked to pledge their allegiance to either Yorkshire or Lancashire.

The average running times of participants supporting Yorkshire and Lancashire will be calculated at the end of the run to see which county can boast the claim to be the fastest 10k runners.

Each county will be captained by two of our runners, with Chris Chittell wearing the white rose of the Yorkists and Conor Ryan, sporting the red rose of the Lancastrians.

England and Leeds Carnegie Rugby star and "adopted Yorkshireman", Hendre Fourie will also join the Yorkshire team to represent Alzheimer's Society.

Says, Chris: "Having worked for many years in Yorkshire, I know how important it is for us to beat those Lancastrians and I am confident the troops will rise to the challenge!"

However there is just as much confidence from the House of Lancaster. Conor, said: "Our army may be slightly smaller as the event is in Sheffield, but we will be full of Lancastrian grit. I’ll be wearing my red rose with pride."

The winning county will be calculated by the average finishing time of all runners competing the 10k course in a time of less than 70 minutes, with a trophy being awarded for the team captain to guard for the 12 months until next years event.

Every entrant will be sent printed red and white roses, for them to decide which one, if any they would like to wear on the day. The organisers will collect the information and make the announcement almost immediately after the 70 minute mark is passed on the day.

If you fancy the challenge and want to join the teams let Ken or Dawn know.
