Our Wensleydale Fundraising Group raised money to help fight blood cancer by holding an afternoon tea which featured a talk by an original Calendar Girl.

Our Wensleydale Fundraising Group’s big week of fundraising got off to a great start in May with their inaugural afternoon tea. The event was held on 11 May as part of our Tea with the Girls initiative, two days before the group’s sixth Beating Blood Cancers Ball. Over 200 ladies (and a handful of lucky gentlemen) enjoyed an afternoon of fizz, fancies and fascinators in a marquee on the outskirts of Leyburn.

The sun was blazing down, the sides of the marquee were drawn back, the pianist was playing and the fizz was flowing. Guests had time to browse and purchase from a fabulous array of artisan stalls before sitting down to enjoy a very entertaining talk by Tricia Stewart, one of the original Calendar Girls. She told the group’s famous story and explained how she became Miss October.

A delicious afternoon tea was served by Haregill Catering and featured extra special additions of individual brownies with iced sunflowers and Pimm’s jelly shots made and donated by friends. Nicky Slater from Get Ahead Hats gave a very informative demonstration of how to wear hats and fascinators and showcased some of the fabulous creations she hires out. The event culminated in a prize draw, where the lucky winner took home a voucher for a Swinton Park Hotel spa day for two. A further raffle of more than 20 prizes was also drawn.

Following a year of planning, the first afternoon tea held by Bloodwise Wensleydale was an outstanding success and raised £3,500 to beat blood cancer. There has been very positive feedback and people have already asked to book a table for next year!
